Doubting the 10km

Wednesday, August 27, 2014
I've have my doubts.

When I'm tired I think, "I can't run a 10K! What was I thinking?" Other times when I have had some rest I believe the Around the Bay Race is doable for me.  Here's why I flip-flop:

Negative actions/thoughts I have about the 10K:
  • I have constant "what if" thoughts. What if I get sick before the race? What if I simply can't do it in the amount of time given? What if I can't breath?
  • Lack of training/motivation.
  • I shouldn't be running with the shoes I have. They have very little support left. This might also be why I'm not training like I should.
Positive actions/thoughts I have about the 10K:
  • I went to the Running Room to buy new shoes. I didn't buy any because I am waiting for a sale, but the simple fact that I did the action must mean I think I can run the 10k run, right? Plus, if I get new shoes that wipes out at least one of the negative actions/thoughts.
  • I spoke with the woman at the Running Room who said getting in shape to run a 10k is totally doable between now and March. Yay!
  • I've committed to running a 5k in October: The Run for a Cure. I have other reasons for running this race but it's still a positive action for me. (www.runforthecure.com/goto/madeline)
  • I've joined another sport which will help me get into better shape*. (I would talk about the sport but that's an entirely different blog post.)
  • I have been going out for walks and did do a bit of a run last week.
  • I figured out how long it would take me to WALK 10k.
Out of all the positive points, I think the last one is the most motivating. The race in March is a 30k relay with my brother and sister; Both who are in better, much better, shape* than I am. As a team, we have 4.5 hours to finish the 30k. This means we each have one hour and 30 minutes to run 10K.

On average, I can walk one kilometer in nine minutes. Let's round it up to 10 minutes for good measure. This means, if I were to only walk  my section of the race, it would take me 100 minutes (10mins/k X 10 k). That is one hour and 40 minutes. That's only ten minutes over my share of the time! Of course, I want to do much better than that but that relieves some of the stress and self doubt.

I haven't committed to the 10k race yet but I think I can do it!

*I am not that out of shape but I have been in better.

Planning for a 10Km run.....maybe.

Thursday, July 31, 2014
Three and a half years ago I ran the 5K Around the Bay Race. My goal was simply complete a timed 5K race. I haven't done much real running since then. I did the 5K CIBC Run For A Cure last October with my brother and sister, but it wasn't a timed run.

Why is this important? Well, my sister has suggested we (my brother, sister and me) do the 30K Around the Bay relay in March. (10K each)

I am not physically close to running 10K. I feel out of shape right now and probably couldn't even run a 5K. How did I let myself get to the point where I can't run 5K anymore?

I'm doing the CIBC Run For A Cure again which will help get me into 5K shape again. I would like to be able to run 10K. So, I am going to start training and blog my running progress at least once a week.

I'm going to ask you for 2 things to help motivate me:

  1. I am on a hunt for a good 10K training schedule. If anyone has any suggestion of a training program comment below. I'll try it out and let you know how it is working for me.
  2. Someone very close to me had breast cancer and had a severe reaction to the chemotherapy. She is still suffering from neuropathy as a side effect of the drugs. The good news is she is currently cancer free. I’m participating in the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation CIBC Run for the Cure on Sunday, October 6, 2014. I have 66 days left to raise $300 for Breast Cancer research. If you would like to make a donation, of any size, please visit http://www.runforthecure.com/goto/madeline
I look forward to your comments and motivation.  :)

Funny but nothing to do with writing.

This has nothing to do with writing but it is too funny not to share.
Enjoy! I know I did.

How one word helped my writing.

Monday, January 13, 2014
I'm still working on the Start the Year Off Write challenge, however I'm skipped a few days and now I am going back and doing them out of order.

Today, I did David Harrison Boils It All Down to One Word prompt. To be honest, I didn't expect to get much out of it. (sorry David) I'm happy to say, I was wrong. (I'm not sure I should be happy that I was wrong but I am happy with the result. I'm sure David will also be happy that I was wrong.) I followed his prompt by thinking about the word he provided. The word turned into a sentence. Then another and another! Before I knew it I had a piece of writing that I think I can use in MG story I'm writing. If you want to know the word used, read David's post on Shannon Abercromie's blog at http://www.shannonabercrombie.com/david-harrison-boils-it-all-down-to-one-word/

Thanks David!

Clarity In Writing

Monday, January 6, 2014
In day two of the Start The Year Off Write challenge, Thanhha Lai has us writing clearly and succinctly. This is something I learned in my technical writing courses as well, so I was eager to attack and complete this challenge. To see Thanhha's challenge using the cut-cut-cut method visit http://www.shannonabercrombie.com/thanhha-lais-cut-cut-cut-method/.

Another tool I find helpful for measuring the clarity of writing is the Gunning Fog Index. I learned about the Fog Index last year during a business writing workshop. It measures the readability of English writing. To learn more about the Fog Index read my post Measuring the Readability of Your Writing.

Four Tactics to Reach Your Goals

Sunday, January 5, 2014
It's almost the end of day one of the Start the Year Off Write challenge and I haven't started. Well, that's not entirely true. It more accurate to say I haven't finished. I have a thought and a title....and then I got side tracked. BUT I was side tracked by this video on How Successful People Reach Their Goals.

Fitting, no?

Watch it with me...

Now, let's take Heidi Grant Halvorson's tactics and apply them to today's writing prompt.

I'm going to:

  • Write a paragraph outlining the beginning, middle and end of my story.
  • Finish my paragraph in the next half hour.
  • Not let the story gaps stop me from finishing. I can improve on the story at a later date.
  • I will not think about white bears.

I better get to work so I can successfully reach my goal. How about you?

UPDATE Jan. 6th: I was successful in writing the paragraph and completing the writing challenge for day 1.

Happy New Year!

I wasn't going to do any writing challenges this January but then I found this!

Start the Year off Write 2014

I'm already pretty busy this month but who isn't? I'm going to give it try! Hope to see you there, too.

Rate Your Story - A Free Critique

Monday, August 26, 2013
No matter how good you are at writing, it is important to have your work reviewed by someone else. Your mom tells you your story is perfect, your kids ask, "Where's the pictures?" and your best friend will giggle at the story with you over a bottle of wine. That's fine, but do you wonder what a published writer thinks of your story?

I've recently discovered Rate Your Story! http://rateyourstory.blogspot.ca/

For the first week of each month, Rate Your Story will accept completed manuscripts that meet the criteria outlined in the submissions guidelines. The manuscripts are then critiqued by volunteer, published authors for FREE and returned in about 14 days. The story is rated on a scale of 1 to 10, with 1 being the highest rating.

Along with the rating service, Rate Your Story also has a very informative blog.

As an added bonus, if the story scores a 1 or 2, Hummingbird Literary will accept submission of the manuscript on specific days. See submission guidelines for full details http://hummingbirdliterary.com/submissions/

I submitted my rhyming, picture book manuscript to Rate Your Story at the beginning of August. I'm excited, yet nervous, about getting my story rated. It was recently tweeted by @RateYourStory that almost all the manuscripts from August are returned and to check our inbox. I've checked....and checked and nothing yet, but I'm sure it will be done soon.

Thank you to all the Rate Your Story, volunteers judges for taking the time to help writers like myself.

  • Lori Degman
  • Melissa Gorzelanczyk
  • Mira Reisberg (Former judge)
  • Katie Clark (New judge next month)

What Made Me Yell On The SkyWheel?

Wednesday, August 7, 2013
The other weekend I was in Niagara Falls, Ontairo with my siblings and my kids and we decided to take a ride on the SkyWheel.
Niagara SkyWheel is a 175-foot tall Ferris wheel in the middle of Clifton Hill, Niagara Falls, Ontario, Canada.
When we reached the top and I saw the view, I let out a yell. What made me yell? No, I'm not afraid of heights.

It wasn't this.
Niagara Falls, USA.
Or this.
Dino Mini Putt
But actually this!

More specifically this!

It's an upside down house! Why did this make me yell? In my picture book manuscript, ANNALEE FRILL, the main character lives in an upside down house. I was so excited that one actually existed I yelled to my sister to take a picture. Being the wonderful person that she is, she got the best picture she could. This house is exactly how I pictured Annalee's house, except it would be on an upside down hill. If you want to learn more about the upside down house in Niagara Falls you can visit their site at http://www.upsidedownhouseniagarafalls.ca/

Unfortunately, I was unable to go to the house during our visit but we don't live too far from Niagara so I will be sure to go next time I'm there. Looking for the ANNALEE FRILL picture book? Well, it's not published yet. I'm currently looking for a publisher or agent. When it does get published, I will be sure to get a picture of me with my book in front of the house. I look forward to that day!

How is a Car like an Oven?

Wednesday, July 17, 2013
How hot is it in Hamilton, Ontario?

It's so hot, a closed car can kill a person.

Spectator Reporter, Bill Dunphy 'bakes' himself in a car for 30 minutes. The inside of the car gets so hot that the paramedics' equipment, used to monitor Bill, malfunctions. Be sure to watch the video in Bill Dunphy's report at http://www.thespec.com/news-story/3895169-baked-my-car-turned-into-an-oven/

Don't leave anyone(children, elderly, pets) in a car in the heat!
